Chapter 4: The Underboss

The widow stood in the doorway with the envelope pressed against her cardigan.

The two children had gone quiet behind her legs.

Corrado Falco sipped her coffee.

"Sit down, sweetheart. Sit. Your husband borrowed forty thousand from me before he died. You know that. We talked about it at the funeral."

"I know," the widow said.

Her voice shook, and she didn't sit.

"Don Bardi sent this," she said. "The boy said it was from him."

"The boy." Corrado looked me up and down. "He's no boy. He's the mechanic whose wife ran off with my nephew."

I felt the room tilt.

Then I steadied it.

"I'm here to put an envelope in her hand," I said. "I did. The job's done."

"The job's not done until I count it." Corrado held out a palm the size of a dinner plate. "That's sixty thousand of the debt, from the Don's pocket. Which means it's mine. Give it to me and I'll mark her paid."

"No."

He smiled at the widow.

"Sweetheart, you'll want to hand that over. Otherwise the marker stays open, and the interest runs, and next month it's the house."

She began to cry without a sound.

She looked at the envelope, at the children, at me.

I stepped between her and the table.

"She's got it in her hand," I said. "My orders were her hand. You want it, you take it from her hand, in front of her grandchildren."

Corrado's smile thinned.

"You're new," he said. "So I'll tell you once. You do not know what you're standing in."

"I know I'm standing in her kitchen."

"Careful, mechanic."

The front door opened.

I knew the footsteps before I turned.
