Chapter 14: Casimir at the Ford

The Silver Ford looked the way it had the first time, shallow and bright over round stones.

This time the clans lined the Wildlands bank in ranks, three thousand riders under a gray morning sky.

On the far bank, Edric's four thousand stood behind a hedge of pikes.

In the middle of the water, on a gray horse, sat Casimir.

He held a white cloth on a spear, as calm as a man waiting for a carriage.

"I don't like it," Torren said.

"Neither do I."

"Then you don't go."

"He asked for me because he thinks I will."

Marit watched the man in the river.

"Casimir does not surrender. He sets a table and waits for you to sit down at it."

"What is the table?"

She studied the Lowmarch bank.

The reeds along the shore stood too still.

A wind was blowing, and they did not move with it.

"Archers in the reeds," she said. "Two hundred, maybe more."

"If I ride to the middle, they close the water behind me and take me alive."
