Odile looked at the gold ring on Casimir's palm for a long moment.

Then she looked at her father's outstretched hand.

She was very small in the middle of that carpet.

Marit felt her sister's fingers shake, and she did not let go.

"Take it, child," Edric said, with terrible gentleness. "It is the best thing I will ever offer you."

"You never offered me anything," said Odile.

Edric's smile stopped.

"Pardon?"

"You told me where to stand, Father. You told me when to smile."

"You told me which of my sisters was the clever one, and which was the pretty one."

"And you told me which of us was going to die in the north."

She took her hand out of Marit's.

She walked, alone, up the carpet toward the dais, with the whole court watching her go.
