Chapter 20: The Fall of the Chancellor

The dagger fell from Casimir's hand and rang on the marble.

Four hundred swords had come up in the doorway, and not one of them moved toward him.

They only waited.

Marit took the vial from the soldier's fist and crossed the long floor at a run.

Torren was still standing, and he was shaking with the effort.

Hild took one look at the glass and her old face crumpled.

"That is the one," she whispered. "That is the cure."

"Drink."

"Marit."

"Drink it, or I pour it down your throat in front of two courts."

A smile cracked his gray lips.

He took the vial, broke the wax with his thumb and drank it in one swallow.

For a heartbeat nothing happened.

Then a flush came back into his face, a thin pink under the gray, and his shoulders dropped.

He drew a deep, ragged breath and straightened to his full height.

The clans in the corridor raised their swords and shouted.

It went up the pillars.

"Better?" Marit asked.

"Hungry."

She laughed and kissed him, in front of everyone, hard and quick.

When she turned, the whole court of Lowmarch was looking at her.

Nobody was whispering anymore.

The old lord with the gray moustache stepped out of the front row.

He was the lord marshal, and he had commanded Edric's cavalry for twenty years.

He bowed to Marit, not deeply, but enough.
