Chapter 21: The Fall of the King

The sun came up red over the Aldermere wall.

Marit stood on the battlement in her iron crown with Torren at her shoulder and watched them bring Casimir out.

Half the city had come.

They packed the square below in silence, cooks and carters and apprentices, the same people who had whispered about her the day before.

Casimir walked with a guard on each arm.

He had stopped screaming in the night, and his face was gray and quiet.

On the scaffold he looked up and found her.

He opened his mouth, and she saw him decide to say something clever.

Nothing came.

She did not look away.

She stayed until the trap fell and the rope pulled tight, and the square let out one long breath.

Then she turned her back on it, and Torren's arm closed around her shoulders.

"Done?" he asked.

"Not yet."

She went down the wall stairs to the throne room, where the second trial of her life was waiting.

Edric had not been allowed to leave.

They had kept him under guard through the night, in his red velvet robe, and he looked ten years older.
