Chapter 22: The Night of Two Crowns

Marit took the two halves of the gold circlet from the marshal's gloved hands.

They weighed almost nothing.

"I will not answer on the steps," she said. "I will answer at dawn, in the throne room, in front of both courts."

"Highness..."

"You asked for a night. I am asking for the same."

He bowed, and she carried the broken gold up the palace stairs under the eyes of five hundred lords.

She did not go to the guest tower.

Her feet took her down a corridor she had walked every day of her first life.

They stopped at a plain door at the end, and she went into the dress room.

It had not changed.

The footstool stood in the middle of the floor.

The long mirror hung on the wall where she had once watched Casimir cross a room toward her.

She set the iron crown on the footstool.

She laid the broken gold beside it.

The two crowns lay in the lamplight, one black and one bright, and she stared at them until the door opened behind her.

Torren came in and closed it.

He did not say anything.

He leaned on the door with his arms crossed, and the lamplight caught the scar through his eyebrow.

"I woke up here," Marit said.

"Here?"

"On that stool, in a wedding gown, twenty years old. Pins in my hem. I had just died."
