Chapter 16: Midnight, Alone

At midnight I walked up the loading ramp of the old customs shed with a leather folder under my arm.

Two men searched me at the door.

They took my Glock, my phone and the knife from my belt.

They let me keep the folder and the pen in my breast pocket, because nobody searches a pen.

The pen was steel, and heavy, and it was also a transmitter my crew could trigger with one click of the cap.

Inside, the shed was a long, cold room with a concrete floor and bare bulbs hung from the roof.

Livia sat in a metal chair at the far end.

She was gagged, her wrists were tied behind her, and her pale blue dress was streaked with dust.

When she saw me, she shook her head hard.

The Corsini boss sat on an upturned crate in front of her with his hands folded.

He was a small man in his seventies with white hair and a camel coat, and he looked like someone's kind grandfather.

Six men stood behind him with guns.

"Miss Brandolini," he said. "Thank you for being on time."

"Take the gag off her."

"After you sign."

"She's twenty-five and she's never hurt anyone. Take it off."

He tilted his head, and one of his men pulled the cloth down.

"Cami," Livia said, hoarse. "Cami, don't. He'll kill both of us."

"Be quiet, sweetheart. I've got this."

I walked to a folding table that had been set up in the middle of the floor.

I laid the folder on it and opened it to the last page.

There were two signature lines.

The top one already held Rocco's name, in his square black hand, signed at the bridge an hour ago.
