Chapter 23: Monday

On Sunday night I stood outside his bedroom door in a borrowed nightgown and did not knock.

I had slept in the blue room all week with the door shut.

I had spent two days signing papers with the estate lawyer, who was now my lawyer, and I had walked through my father's house alone.

Nobody had asked me for anything all day.

Standing in the hall, I understood that this was the first time in my life that was true.

I opened the door without knocking.

Jonas sat on the edge of the bed in the dark with a shirt unbuttoned and his elbows on his knees.

He looked up.

"Willa."

"Don't get up."

He didn't.

I crossed the floor and stood between his knees, and I put my hands in his black hair.

"I'm not here because of the will," I said. "Or because of the ballroom. Or because you stood on that stage."

"Why are you here?"

"Because I want to be."

His hands came up and gripped my hips through the thin cotton.

He pressed his face into my stomach and breathed in.

"Tell me what you want," he said, muffled.

"I want you to stop being careful."

He lifted his head.

In the grey window light his eyes were dark and fierce, and the careful man was gone from them.
