Chapter 18: The Bar on Broad Street

The Broad Street Hotel bar had amber lamps and a pianist who wanted to be a jazz band.

Nine people sat at the tables, and none of them had anything to do with me.

I walked in at five to eight in the one good black dress.

It was the second time I had worn it in a week, and I decided that made it lucky.

My phone was in my clutch with the voice recorder running.

Glenn was in a car across the street with the thin lawyer and a thermos of coffee.

He had argued with me for forty minutes in the penthouse hall, and in the end I had won by putting on my coat.

I found Colin in the corner booth.

He had a leather folder in front of him, a glass of bourbon, and a white bank envelope square in the middle of the table.

He stood up when he saw me.

His eyes went down the dress and came back up with a look I used to mistake for love.

"You wore the black one," he said. "Good girl."

"Don't," I said.

"Sit."

I sat.

I took my phone out of the clutch and set it face down on the tablecloth under a cocktail napkin.
