Chapter 17: The Edit

There were six people on the sidewalk outside the clinic when I got there.

Two held phones up.

One had a microphone with a station logo on it.

The glass door behind them was locked, and the sign in the window said CLOSED, which I had never seen in daylight.

I pushed through them and banged on the glass.

Maia opened it a crack, saw me, and let me in.

"They've been out there since three," she said. "Four patients cancelled. A woman called to say she wouldn't let a thief touch her back."

"You're not a thief."

"That's what I told her. She hung up."

She was pale, and she was holding herself together with both elbows.

On the reception desk a laptop played the video on a loop.

Delaney on her knees in the grass.

My jacket in her fist.

Then the cut to Maia in the lobby, and a voice that wasn't ours saying, "Sources say the physical therapist visited the chairman's office days before the wedding and left a very wealthy woman."

"That isn't what happened," I said.

"I know what happened. I'm the one who was there."

"I'll say it to them."

"Wes."

"I'll say it right now."

I opened the door.

The microphone swung toward my face.

"My wife was offered a million dollars to leave me," I said. "She refused it to Mr. Vanstone's face, and he put the check back in his drawer. You can ask him. He told me himself, on a pier, with witnesses."

"Isn't it convenient," said a voice from the curb, "that you forgot your fiancée and remembered this?"

Dalton Rhodes stood across the street in a camel coat, filming with his own phone.
