Chapter 6: Waiting Room

I made the clinic in ten minutes.

Dalton Rhodes stood in the middle of the waiting room holding a huge bouquet of white roses.

He had a smile on for every chair in the room.

There were six patients.

An old man with a walker, two teenagers in soccer gear, a woman with her arm in a sling, and a couple sharing a magazine.

They were all watching him.

"I'd like to apologize to everyone for my fiancée's behavior yesterday," Dalton was saying. "I know the video went around. It was an emotional time."

"That's very kind," said the woman in the sling.

"It's the least I can do."

Maia stood behind the front desk with her arms crossed.

She'd put on her white clinic jacket and the face she used on patients who said they'd already done the exercises.

"Mr. Rhodes," she said. "This is a place of work."

"Of course, of course." He held out the roses. "For you. A peace offering."

"I'm allergic to roses."

"Then for the desk."

"The desk is also allergic."

One of the teenagers coughed into his shoulder.

I stopped just inside the door and let her handle it.

"I'd just like five minutes," Dalton said, and his voice softened to something warm and private. "Please. I only want to help you."

"Help me with what?"

"With the thing you're about to go through." He leaned an elbow on her desk. "Look, you seem like a smart person. Here's the truth. Wes doesn't know what he's got. He's lost. He grabbed the first kind face that was nice to him, and the day his head clears, he's going to look at you and see a nurse."
