Chapter 16: Her Own Words

Nolan's POV

I was in Millie's truck when Margot called.

"Come back," she said. "Please. I'm going live in ten minutes and I want you in the room."

"You don't have to."

"I do. He told two million people I'm dying. I'm going to tell them the rest."

Millie turned the truck around without being asked.

The fourth-floor room looked like a newsroom.

Margot's lawyer had a tripod on the tray table and a phone on the tripod, and her hair was brushed, and she was sitting up in the hospital gown with the oxygen tube taped under her nose.

She did not hide it.

"Stand by the door," she told me. "Where I can see you. Don't come on camera."

"Why?"

"Because I'll cry if you're close."

I stood by the door.

The lawyer counted her in on his fingers.

The red light came on.

"Hi," Margot said to the lens. "It's Margot Treharne. You've seen the post about my chart. It's true."

The viewer number in the corner started to climb.

Fifty thousand, then three hundred thousand.

"Three years ago I was told I had months. Then I got better and never asked why. Today I nearly died again, in a county clerk's office, in front of a flag."

She took a breath.

"I'll say the rest plainly, because I haven't been plain with anyone for a long time."

The comments rolled up the side of the screen faster than I could read them.

"A week ago I begged my husband for a fake divorce. I did it so my boyfriend would stop threatening to post about us. That's what I asked of him. I'm not proud of it."

The comments slowed.

"I left a man who cooked for me and filled my pills every Sunday for six years, and I went to restaurants with a man who filmed me on my kitchen floor. He left me there for half an hour. I was on the floor, and he said I was being dramatic."
