Chapter 13: What Dane Did
Dane did not take the book from me.
He came into the office and shut the door behind him, and he sat down on the edge of the desk.
"Read it to you," he said.
"Out loud. Every word you wrote."
He looked at the ledger in my hands for a long time.
Then he held out his hand, and I put it in it.
He read the agreement in a flat voice.
When he got to the line at the bottom, he stopped.
"G. swears she'll be treated right," I said. "Go on."
"I wrote that so I could sleep."
"Did it work?"
"No."
He closed the book.
"Dad borrowed against the Ridge in ninety-eight, when the roof fell in at the garage. Old Kingswood wrote the note. Dad paid it down until he died, and then it was mine."
"Terrence told you this?"
"Terrence came to me the week you got engaged. He said he loved you. He said the note was between our families and he'd rather it stayed quiet, as long as I kept clear of you."
"Why would he want that?"
"He said you were happier without the club hanging over you." Dane rubbed his eyes with the heel of his hand. "He said you'd told him you wanted a clean start."
"I never said that."
"I know that now."
"Dane. I called the Ridge landline for a year."
He flinched as if I had hit him.
"I got a machine," I said. "I left your name and my number. I left it on your birthday. I left it the day I got married."
"Terrence told me the messages were him. That you'd asked him to call and say you were fine."
