Chapter 16: The Patch

Sean's POV

Dane called the whole club into the clubhouse at six that evening and locked the doors.

Eleven patched members, two prospects, and June standing at the back with her arms folded.

Alexis was not there.

She was in the main house with the deed on the kitchen table, and she had told me, in the yard, in a very polite voice, that she needed to be alone with it.

I stood by the bar.

Dane stood at the head of the long table, with his hands flat on the wood.

"Here's where we are," he said. "Two hundred and forty thousand, in twenty-six days. I've got a plan, but it's mine, and I'll tell you when I'm done."

Nobody spoke.

"Before that, there's something else."

He looked at me.

I had been waiting five years for him to look at me like that.

"Say it," he said. "You've had it in your mouth since the courthouse."

"Not here."

"Here. In front of them. They can hear what I did, and what you did."

I pushed off the bar.

My ribs still hurt where Terrence's deputy had held me, and I let myself feel that.

"I stood in that lot," I said, "the day she married him."

A few of the older men looked down at the table.

They had known I'd gone.

They had not known why I came back looking the way I did.

"I watched her walk down the steps," I said. "She was smiling for the photographer, and her hand was holding his sleeve so tight that her knuckles were white. You told me she was happy."

"She looked happy."

"She looked like someone holding her breath."

"Sean."

"I told you that. In the truck, right afterward. You said it was nerves, and I let it be nerves."
