Chapter 18: Grayson Reads
We spread the new slip on the Quad's table at dinner and stared at it.
"It looks right," Lane said. "Same layout, same signature, same stamp."
"It looks exactly like the other two," I said.
Sean stood at the end of the bench with his tray.
He had been standing there for a full minute, and nobody had told him to sit or go.
"Rule one," I said. "Nobody eats alone."
He sat.
Grayson put out a hand without a word.
I passed the slip across.
He pulled it close, until his nose almost touched the paper, and laid a thick finger under the first line.
"Don't," Lane said quietly. "Not here. Everyone's watching."
"Everyone's already watching," Grayson said. "She put it on the feed."
He read.
He read it the way he read everything, slow and flat, one word at a time, with his lips moving.
"Con. Duct. Notice."
"We know what it says, Gray."
"You know what you think it says." He didn't look up. "I don't. I have to read every letter."
