Chapter 4: The Library After Ten
He showed up at the library at ten past ten that night, holding his seminar book.
I was at the long table on the second floor, where the lamps were green and the radiators clanked.
I had been there since dinner, pretending to study and actually watching the door.
Grayson Tull stopped at the end of my table and didn't sit.
"This stays between us," he said.
"Sit down, Grayson."
"I mean it. If one person hears..."
"Then I'll have no way to make you apologize in front of a hundred people. I need you alive and proud for that. Sit."
He sat.
The chair creaked under him.
He opened the book to the second page and put his finger under the first word, and I saw his whole body brace.
"Okay," I said. "Don't read it. Tell me what the page is about."
"What?"
"You've been in that room for a month. You know the story better than half of them. Tell me."
He looked at me suspiciously.
Then he talked for four minutes about the narrator and the porch and the father who never said goodbye, and he was funny and sharp about it, and he used the word *melancholy* correctly.
"That's your answer," I said. "That's an A."
"I can't write it down. The letters flip. They do this thing, they slide around like they're on ice."
He said it fast.
"My mother says I'm lazy," he said. "My father says I'm stupid. The school tutors here told me it was an attitude problem. Rhys is the only person who ever figured out why, and he's the one who taught me to make jokes before somebody notices."
