Chapter 13: Two Bars
"What do you mean, it isn't supposed to exist?" I said into Jesse's neck.
"What?" Jesse said, still holding me off the ground.
"Nothing. You smell like gas."
"I just raced."
He put me down.
Half the lot was still screaming his name.
Somebody poured a soda over his head, which I guess is a racing thing.
Over his wet white hair, the two bars hung one on top of the other.
Purple, sixty.
Pink, sixty.
[Give me a minute,] said the System. [I'm reading a very long manual.]
It took the whole ride home.
At my dorm, Jesse kissed me under the streetlight, quick and smiling.
The pink bar ticked up to sixty-one.
The purple bar didn't move at all.
[Oh,] said the System. [Oh, you're kidding me.]
"Tell me."
[The main system didn't just flip the labels. It merged two readouts into one bar. Annoyance and the other one.]
"What other one?"
[The one you were sent here for, Host.]
I stood on the dorm steps with my mouth open.
