Chapter 14: Live

I read the email three times on the dorm steps.

[Traced,] said the System. [You. You can't trace a parking space.]

"She knows that."

[Then why?]

"Because I took him," I said. "And then I took her video down. And then I took her boyfriend's three grand."

Upstairs, Bea read it and said a word her mother wouldn't like.

Then she said, "Good."

"Good?"

"A public review. In the gallery. In front of people." She pushed her glasses up. "She just picked the one fight you can't lose."

I wasn't so sure.

I hadn't taken a single art class, in either life.

On Thursday at four, the gallery was full.

Darcy had posted about it, so her people came.

Half of them were from the race lot, and they'd come to see if the warden lost.

Jesse came straight from the garage with grease on his knuckles.

The old man came too, in a clean shirt, which I'd never seen.

The committee chair stood by my six drawings with two other jurors.

Darcy stood by her portrait with her phone up, filming herself.

"Okay," she told her phone. "Let's see if the warden can actually draw."
