Chapter 16: His Father
Nobody moved to open it.
The bell rang again.
Then the man on the porch stopped ringing and just opened the door.
"Come on," he said. "It's freezing. Is this how you say happy Thanksgiving?"
He was tall like Jesse, with the same grey eyes, gone watery.
His jacket was too thin for November.
He had the bottle in one hand and a grin on his face.
"Hey, Ruby-girl," he said.
Ruby didn't say anything.
She pulled the blanket up to her chin on the couch.
The old man had come in behind Jesse from the back door.
He stood by the kitchen table with his arms folded.
Jesse's father looked around the room.
The TV.
The table.
The pie.
"Smells good in here," he said. "You saved me a plate, right, babe?"
Mrs. Rainey said, "No."
He laughed.
"Still at the grocery store? Still in that vest?" He shook his head. "Twenty years, and she still dresses like a cashier."
"She is a cashier," Jesse said. "She's the head cashier."
