Chapter 5: Under the Blanket

I didn't move him.

You don't wake a sleeping wolf to tell him he's on the wrong bed.

I lay there with a hundred and sixty pounds of King on my stomach and listened to him snore.

At some point I fell asleep again with my hand in his ruff.

When I woke up the second time, it was grey outside, and the fur under my hand was gone.

There was skin there instead.

Warm, bare skin.

A man's shoulder.

Caspian was lying half on top of me under my blanket, his cheek on my stomach, one arm thrown across my hips.

He had nothing on.

The blanket had slid down to the small of his back, and there was a lot of back.

I stopped breathing.

He made a low sound in his sleep and turned his face into my shirt.

His mouth was right over my navel.

I felt his breath through the cotton, and every inch of me woke up at once.

"Caspian," I whispered.

He breathed in.

Slow and deep, the way the wolf had breathed into my hair.

His arm tightened around my hips.

"Caspian."

His eyes opened.

For one second they were silver.

Then they were grey, and he was awake, and he understood exactly where he was.

He pushed himself up on his hands, so he was over me, braced on either side of my shoulders.

The blanket stayed caught around his waist.

Barely.

"What are you doing in my bed?" he said.

"This is my bed. You're in my bed. You came in at three in the morning and fell asleep on me."

"I didn't."

"You snore."

"I don't snore."

"Like a tractor."

His jaw was clenched so hard the scar went white.

He was furious, and he wasn't moving.

His hair was falling in his eyes, and his chest was rising and falling hard, and he was looking at my mouth.
