Chapter 16: The Account

Nero's thumb moved, and the photo slid up.

There was a second post under it.

Three pictures of a notebook page, a little blurry, shot from below.

My handwriting.

"Subject: me. Variable: seven alphas. Hypothesis: one of them."

"Hadrian, my room, 12:20. Pulse 115. EYES GOLD. Witnessed."

The caption on that one was just a row of crying-laughing faces.

Four hundred comments already. It was 6:41 in the morning.

"Cash," I said. "He photographed it in the study yesterday. I watched him do it."

"Cash didn't post it," Nero said. He scrolled to the top. "That account's his girlfriend's. Everybody on the team knows. She runs it off her second phone."

"That photo's eighteen days old," said a twin over his shoulder.

"She was saving it," said the other twin.

The Commander held out his hand.

Nero gave him the phone.

He read the whole thing, down into the comments, and his jaw went tight.

He handed it back without a word.

Then he turned to me.

"Do you have rounds?"

"At seven, sir."

"Then go to rounds." His eyes were gray and tired and very steady. "Walk in the front door. Don't you dare use the side."

I walked in the front door.

Two residents by the lobby elevator lifted their phones as I came through.

On the stairs, an intern I'd taught to suture said, "Pulse check, Dr. Tenley?" and three people laughed.

On the ward, Titus was already at the head of the team.

He'd seen it. He didn't say a word about it.

"Bed two," he said. "Dr. Tenley's patient. Go ahead."

Bed two was a Guard sergeant's wife, a beta in for a bad gallbladder.

Her husband stood up from the chair before I reached the bed.

"No," he said.

"Sir, I'm her doctor."

"Not anymore." He pointed at my pendant. "We read the account. Seven brothers. In her own family's house."
