Chapter 29: First Patient

I was across the river in ten minutes.

Hadrian drove. Titus read the midwife's texts out loud from the back seat.

"Contractions three minutes apart. Waters gone an hour. Her pressure's fine."

"How's the pup?"

"Heartbeat strong."

"Then why is your leg going?"

He stopped bouncing it.

I was still in jeans and Hadrian's uniform jacket, with my hair full of pine needles.

The Queen's room was hot and bright and crowded.

Two midwives, and the King in his shirtsleeves, holding his wife's hand so hard his knuckles were white.

And the Palace surgeon, the finalist who'd lost to me twelve hours ago, already scrubbed.

He held a gown out to me.

"Your patient, Doctor," he said.

I stepped through the door, and I smelled it.

Not with my nose. With all of me.

Under the sweat and the soap and the clean sheets, a thin bright thread of copper.

Blood. Fresh. Not where blood should be.

Behind the pup.

I looked at the monitor. The pup's heartbeat was a steady green line.

"Pressure's good," said the senior midwife. "Pup's good. She's doing beautifully."
