Chapter 17: The Gate
I looked at the radio in my hand.
Then I looked at the little gray box bolted under the dash.
It was the logger, the recorder every county rig carries, the one that keeps every word that goes over the air.
Nobody had ever pulled it out of this old truck.
Its red light was on.
I keyed the handset again.
"Marchmont Hall, I'm not asking the housekeeper. Put the Speaker on."
The housekeeper didn't answer.
The radio hissed for a long moment.
Then Sybil's voice came on, cool and clear.
"Miss Mackey. How enterprising of you."
"Open the gate. There are burned children on the north shore."
"There are wolves on the north shore. Wolves are quite capable of running."
"The kids are too small to shift. There's an old man who can't breathe. The prince is up there with them."
"Then the prince can carry them."
My partner turned his head and stared at the radio.
"This is the Crown's road," Sybil said. "During a Court emergency it is closed to human vehicles, under the Moon law. The King is up on the ridge with the Hall's wolves, digging line. Until he comes down, the Hall is mine. The gate stays locked to humans."
