Chapter 20: The Vote
The old capo stood to take the count, because it was his right as the eldest at the Table.
He rested his big hands on the felt and looked down the long line of faces.
"The motion before the Table is that Nico Valenti be named underboss and heir," he said. "Each man answers for himself, aloud."
"By the chair on the Don's left."
The man who had said "second" ten minutes ago looked at the torn page in front of him.
"Against," he said.
His voice cracked.
"Against."
"Against."
"Against."
Nico sat with his hands flat on his thighs and listened to his name go down the table.
He did not speak.
He looked at each man as he voted, and the men looked away, and I saw he was memorizing them.
The seventh was the capo who had said "third."
He took a long breath and glanced at Nico's face.
"For," he said.
A murmur ran around the table.
"For," said the man next to him, quietly, and that one would not look at anyone.
