Chapter 21: The Fall

Carmine was between us before the pistol finished rising.

I never saw him move.

One moment I was looking down a barrel, and the next I was looking at the back of my husband's good black coat.

"Shoot," Carmine said to his brother, without raising his voice. "Shoot me first, Nico. You owe me that."

"Get out of the way."

"No."

Nico's arm shook.

I could see his face over Carmine's shoulder, blotched and wet, with the tape pulling at his nose.

"I am not the one who is wrong," he said. "I am the one who wanted her. Nobody else in this family ever wanted anything."

"I wanted her too," Carmine said. "I asked her. I didn't build a trap."

Nico's finger moved on the trigger.

Then a thick hand reached across the table from behind him and closed on his wrist.

It belonged to one of the two men who had voted for him.

He was a man in his fifties, with a tired face and a dark tie, and he did not look at Nico at all.
