Chapter 24: The Long Table
On the second Sunday in December, I was at Deerpath by ten, with flour on both forearms and an envelope in my apron pocket.
The dining room was empty and warm.
The long table had been laid for twenty-two, with white linen and the good plates, and one chair had been taken away.
Nobody had said whose.
I had moved the carving knife from the head of the table to the foot.
I stood at the head with my hand on the high carved chair.
The housekeeper had stopped asking my permission for things.
She just asked what I wanted, and I said.
The door opened behind me.
I knew the step before I turned.
Carmine came in out of the cold in his charcoal suit, with a bag of bread in one hand and frost in his hair.
He set the bag down and looked at the table, and at me standing behind the high chair.
"You moved it," he said.
"I moved all of it."
"You're early."
"I wanted the room before it filled."
He crossed the floor without hurrying.
He stopped in front of me and put a hand on the chair back on either side of mine.
I was caged between his arms and the carved wood.
