Chapter 24: The Sign

I planted the sign myself, at six in the morning on the second Saturday in January, with a rubber mallet from the hardware store and a pair of my mother's gloves.

The ground was frozen a foot down.

It took eleven blows to set the post, and the sound went out across the white fields like gunfire.

The sign said COMING SOON in blue letters over the name of a realty company in Camden.

Below it, in smaller type, it said 14 ASH POINT ROAD.

I stood back and looked at it in the gray dawn, with my breath going up.

For two weeks we had been something with no name.

I'd slept at his house, or he'd slept at mine, and in the mornings we had stood in each other's kitchens drinking coffee without a single word about it.

He'd said I love you once.

He hadn't said it again.

He hadn't said stay.

I had signed the realtor's form on Wednesday afternoon, with my hand shaking, and told myself it was only a way of finding out.

A pickup came down Ash Point Road, slowly, through the drifts.
