Chapter 9: Which Line Did You Write

The symposium hall in Portland held four hundred astronomers, and every seat was taken.

Nolan stood at the back wall with Lydia beside him.

On the big screen, Leland Crewe stood in a pressed gray jacket with a remote in his hand.

"The filter we built for the Deep Field survey," Leland said, "reduces false transients by ninety-four percent."

The slide behind him showed Nolan's flow chart.

Nolan knew every box on it.

He had drawn them on a napkin in a basement lab at three in the morning, seven years ago.

"Our team's approach was to treat the noise itself as a signal," Leland said. "That insight made the whole result possible."

"That's your insight?" Lydia said, very low.

"It's mine," Nolan said. "It's mine, and it's on a slide with the Institute's logo."

In the front row, a silver-haired man in a navy suit sat with his hands folded on his knee.

Harold had not turned around.

He did not need to.

Leland finished to warm applause, and the moderator took the microphone.

"We have time for questions. Please use the aisle mics and state your name."

Nolan walked down the side aisle.

Lydia came with him.

Heads turned, row by row, as people recognized the director's daughter.

At the aisle mic, a young man was asking about telescope time.

Leland answered him smoothly.

Then Nolan stepped up.

"Nolan Ridley," he said, and the hall heard it.
