Chapter 18: A Night Is Not a Yes
Colton took the word.
"Okay," he said.
"Not because of the money. Not because of the chair."
"Okay."
"You can't do something huge and expect me to sign for it."
"I'm not expecting anything." His jaw worked. "I'll go."
"Go," I said.
He went, and I watched the elevator close on his back.
By nine that night I was in my kitchen with the lights off and all three locks turned.
The reporters had thinned to one van at the corner.
My ring lay on the table in front of me where I had taken it off the chain, and I turned it with one finger.
At ten the doorbell rang.
I knew it was him.
I opened the door anyway.
He stood on the step in his charcoal coat with no tie, and his hands were empty.
"I'm not asking to come in," he said. "I'm not asking for anything. I was driving and I ended up here."
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only one I have."
I looked at him for a long time.
His eyes were bloodshot.
He had lost his chair, a company and half his savings in one day.
