Chapter 21: The Parking Lot

The banquet broke up in ten minutes.

Nobody ate the cake.

I went out the side door of the Harvest Diner into the parking lot, and Stefan came with me, one hand at my back.

The night was warm and smelled of cut grass and fryer oil.

Leah was already at her silver SUV with the door open, and Blaine had followed her across the gravel.

"Say it," he said. "Say it isn't true."

"Blaine, please keep your voice down."

"Say it."

"It's complicated."

"Is it true?" He was shouting now, and his voice broke in the middle. "Did you lie to me for eighteen years?"

Leah closed her eyes.

When she opened them, her face was a face I had never seen.

It was tired and flat and a little bored.

"Of course I lied to you," she said.

Blaine stepped back.

"You were twenty-two and married to a girl who was already pregnant," Leah said. "You were gone. I had a baby coming that nobody was going to claim, and you were the only one I had."

"You told me she was mine."

"And you believed me in a heartbeat."

She said it with something close to contempt.

"You wanted to believe it. You needed to be somebody's hero. Winona never needed one, so you came to me."

"Leah."

"I was lonely, Blaine. I needed somebody to stay."

She looked past him then, straight at me.
