Chapter 12: What She Gave Him
"Take what back?" Wynne said again.
Garrick's good hand clawed the sand.
"The strength. Whatever happened at the Stone. I can't call my wolf and I can't lift my own sword. Something went out of me when you gave the mark back." He gasped. "Take it back. Please."
Wynne looked at him without moving.
Behind her, three hundred wolves had closed in around the ring to hear.
"I didn't take anything from you," she said.
"Then what is this?"
"I think I can answer that."
Hester had come up through the crowd with a leather satchel under her arm.
She had changed her shawl for the grey one she wore to funerals.
Her hands were not quite steady.
"I'd have said it in private, Wynne. I see now that I can't."
"Say what?"
Hester opened the satchel and took out a book.
It was thick and black, bound in cracked leather, with a tarnished silver clasp.
Half the elders drew in their breath at the sight of it.
"This is the Luna Codex," Hester said, to the beach. "It has been kept in the Ashfall archive for two hundred years, and nobody but the Lunas reads it. I took it from the archive the night I pulled the silver from her leg. I've read it five times since."
"Hester."
"Hear me, child."
She turned a page.
"The Tennant line has a gift. Every Tennant woman who takes a mate gives him her strength through the bond. It runs into him, day and night, like a spring into a well. It makes him faster and harder to break. It heals him. It makes him undefeated."
Nobody moved.
"It costs her," Hester said. "She grows tired. She aches in the winter. Her wolf goes quiet, and she can't shift. Wynne's mother lived that way for twenty-six years and died at fifty with grey hair."
