Chapter 19: Ice
The ice came down at four in the afternoon and took the power at five.
By dark every limb in Boxley Valley was glassed over and cracking.
The road from the Hearth Barn to my father's house had turned to a sheet.
I did not mind.
I was in my own kitchen for the first time in two months.
The old Home Comfort cookstove was roaring, and a kerosene lamp burned on the long table.
Kenton and Sissy had moved to her trailer the week after Jubal's market.
The midwife had brought me the house key in November, with a ham wrapped in a dish towel.
She had not said a word about it.
The house smelled of cold woodsmoke and my mother's lemon oil, and I had walked through every room with my hand on the walls.
Now it was the night before the Moot, and the three of us were snowed in with a pot of beans and a roaring stove.
"I'd like it noted," Jubal said, "that I drove in on the ice for this."
"It's noted," said Tobe.
"I put chains on the Ford. I slid backward down the Cave Mountain road for a quarter mile."
"You live in a town with a pharmacy."
"The pharmacy doesn't have her," Jubal said.
He was sitting on the end of the long table with a book in his lap.
It was an old black-bound ledger I had found in my father's desk.
Inside it, in my grandfather's slanting hand, were the rules of the Boxley pack, copied out by lamplight in the year of the great flood.
"The Moot's rule," Jubal said. "Do you want to hear the first line, or are you going to stand there and pace?"
