Chapter 21: Home

Tobe had told the elders he would take the Warden's post back if his seat stayed at my table.

The elders had said that was fair.

That was all the pack's business I wanted that day.

By dark I was in my own bed, in the room I was born in, and I was wearing nothing but my mother's chain.

My father had built the bed when I turned twelve, out of pine from the home place, and it was wide enough for three.

The quilt on it was the wedding-ring one, and it smelled of cedar.

Snow ticked at the window, and the cookstove glowed downstairs, and a candle burned on the dresser.

"Come here," I said.

Tobe sat on the edge of the bed, with his boots off and his shirt open.

Jubal stood at the foot, with his cuffs unbuttoned and rolled to the elbow.

Neither of them moved.

They were looking at the chain.

It lay cool on my collarbone, and the little pearl rested in the hollow of my throat.

"I've wanted to see it on you," Jubal said, quietly, "in this room. For about nine years."

"You've never been in this room."

"I've been in it in my head. It was tidier."

I laughed, and he came around the bed, and Tobe took my hand.

There was nothing left to undress, so Tobe took down my braid instead.

He undid it with his thick careful fingers until my hair fell loose down my back.

Jubal drew it forward over my shoulders and kissed my neck above the chain.

"Slow," I said. "Tonight I want slow."

"We can do slow," said Tobe.

"All night," said Jubal.

They turned me over first, onto my belly on the quilt, and Jubal fetched the bottle of almond oil from the kitchen.

He warmed it in his palms.

Then two pairs of hands went over my back, one big and slow and one quick and clever.

I made a sound into the pillow that I had never made in that room.

Tobe worked the long muscles on either side of my spine.

His thumbs found every knot that years of shoeing horses had put there.

Jubal started at my feet and worked up, calf and knee and the soft back of my thigh.
