Chapter 11: The Stone at Night
We left the truck on the ridge road and ran the last mile in the dark, three of us, with Dell wheezing behind.
"I hate this," she panted. "I hate hills, I hate the moon, and I hate that you two are not out of breath."
"Dell."
"I'm just saying the Alpha could carry me."
"Not tonight," said Soren, and took a lantern from her hand.
A light was burning up ahead on the crest.
It wasn't the cold white of the moon.

Orrin Dahl knelt in front of the slab with his back to us, scraping.
He had a mason's chisel in one fist and a wire brush in the other.
The sound carried down the slope.
Little chips of lichen rained onto his boots.

She was knitting.
