Chapter 24: The Run
The Hunter's Moon came over the eastern ridge on Friday night, huge and copper.
Two hundred wolves stood at the Standing Stone to see it.
I climbed onto the flat rock where Orrin had stood for thirty years and called the Run.
"This is the Blackfir Run," I said, "and it's the first of mine."
"Nobody gets hunted."
"Nobody gets told they've no right to be here."
"Every wolf of this pack who wants to run, runs, mated or not, young or gray."
"The Alpha runs with you and not after you."
"The foul rule is dead."
"At sunrise, whoever touches the Stone may ask me one boon, in front of everyone, and I'll answer it honestly."
A cheer went up that shook the lanterns.
Dell stood at the foot of the Stone with the Keeper's book open on her knee.
Sigrid sat on her camp stool with a thermos and her cane across her lap.
"I'm too old to run," she told me. "But I'll sit here and watch you do it properly."
Down in the valley, Jorgen had set a lantern on the gatepost at the mouth of the road.
I could see it burning, small and gold.
He lit it every night, and I had never asked him why.
Soren stood at my shoulder.
He wore a plain gray henley, and he was grinning.
"Ready?" I said.
"With you."
"Then go."
The pack went down the Ridge.
It was the sound I'll remember, two hundred pairs of boots in the dark, laughing.
