Chapter 8: On His Knees
Jorgen walked the length of the hall with every eye on him and laid the bundle on the head table.
He unwrapped the flannel.
Charred pages lay in rows under the lamps, black at the edges, with a heavy slanting hand running down the middle.
"I watched my father burn these," he said, and nobody stirred.
"I was twenty-one, and I said nothing for eight years."
Orrin made a noise.
"He's confused. He's a boy. That girl has been working on him..."
"You taught me to count, Dad," said Jorgen. "I can count."
Sigrid Brekke got up off her bench and crossed the hall with her cane tapping.
She picked up the nearest page and held it to the lamp.
"Loops," she said. "Every g."
She folded the pages back into the flannel with her small brown hands and tucked the bundle under her arm.
"The Council will hear Jorgen Dahl at this hall at sunrise," she said.
"Until then these stay with me."
"And anyone who lays a finger on the boy answers to me."
No one laughed at her.
Orrin looked at his son for a long time.
Then he looked at me, and the smile came back, thin as a wire.
"Dawn, then," he said. "I'll bring a motion of my own."
Soren was sitting on the lodge steps in the dark when I found him.
