Chapter 9: Ask Me Properly

I came down the last two steps and stood over him.

Two hundred wolves went quiet to hear my answer.

"Get up," I said.

Vidar blinked.

"Get up off the ground," I said. "I'm not answering that in front of an audience."

Somebody in the crowd laughed, shocked.

Vidar looked at me for a long second.

Then he stood up.

He was a head and a half taller than me, and he stood there in front of his whole pack.

"Ask me when nobody's watching," I said. "Then I'll answer you."

I turned around and went inside.

He followed me.

So did the noise of the courtyard, until he shut the great oak doors on it.

We stood alone in the empty hall with the council's breakfast still on the table.

"Linnea."

"Two days ago you said you'd die before you took me," I said. "This morning you're on your knees. What changed?"

His jaw worked.

"You saw his face," he said quietly. "My uncle."

"I saw it."

"If I die, he's King by the next morning. Nobody in this pack will stop him from doing whatever he wants with you." His hands flexed at his sides. "Last night was him asking nicely."

"So you'd rather kill me yourself."

He flinched.

"That's not..." He stopped. "If you're my wife, you're pack. If you're pack, you're protected. If you live through the bond..."

"If."

"If," he said.

I sat down on the edge of the council table.

I was so tired my hands were shaking.

"I won't say yes to a death sentence," I said. "I'll say yes to a curse I understand. Those are different things."

"There's nothing to understand."

"There's always something to understand. Somebody said words over your grandfather. What were they? Exactly?"
