Chapter 7: The Bite

Finola's POV

The council chamber had a long oak table, a tall window, and forty people on benches who all wanted to see me lose.

I stood at the foot of the table in the grey dress.

Aldric sat at its head.

On my left the Rooke house had taken the front bench, and Jasper sat at the end of it in a dark suit, with his hair combed wet.

Perrin stood against the back wall with the other guards.

Six days had passed since the last cup of tea.

The headaches were gone, and my head felt clear for the first time in four years.

"We are here," said the eldest of the three petitioning lords, "to restore a mated woman to her mate."

He had a dry, creaking voice, and he used it slowly.

"Jasper Lowe has felt her pull since her eighteenth birthday. The lot was tainted, the claim is older than the Choosing, and Crown law says a true bond outranks a draw."

"Does Crown law say how a bond is proven?" Aldric asked.

"By the mark, Majesty."

"Then prove it."

Jasper stood up.

I had never seen him look so pleased with himself.

"Finola," he said, gently. "Come here, love. Let's end this."

I thought of the Choosing.

I thought of four years of after.

"All right," I said.

Jasper blinked.

I walked up to him, and I pulled my hair over my shoulder and bared my neck.

"Do it here. In front of everyone."

He took my arms, and I smelled his cologne.

His breath was shaky on my skin.
