Chapter 12: The Blaster's Daughter

I ran all the way down the stairs with the newspaper in my fist.

The council hall was a ballroom at the back of the Keep with the old mill's iron beams still showing in the ceiling.

Eight wolves in black coats sat at a long curved table.

The King sat in the middle of them, in a high chair, with a gavel under his hand.

Strake stood alone on the floor in front of the table, in the pale suit, looking bored.

I pushed through the doors, and every head turned.

"Macy," the King said.

I held up the newspaper.

"This was in your desk."

His face went gray.

He did not look at the paper.

He looked at me, and he said, in front of eight Alphas, "I know. I will answer you. Not in this room."

"You said after the council."

"Yes."

"The council is now."

"Then sit," he said, gently, "and let me do what I have to do first. Please."

I did not want to.

I wanted to go up the aisle and throw the paper at his chest.

Selma stood in the gallery by the wall and waved at me frantically.

I went and sat beside her.

My hands would not keep still.

"What is it?" she whispered.

I passed her the clipping.

She read it.

She looked at me.

"Macy, that could be a lie," she said. "Newspapers lied all the time."

"It was in his desk."

"Maybe he's been collecting evidence against Strake."

"With my father's name on it."

"Macy."

"Selma," I said. "Don't."

She closed her mouth and held my hand.

On the floor, the King struck the gavel once.

"We are here," he said, "on a charge of excess in the Harrow Creek sector. Alpha Strake ordered twenty-nine lashes on a human woman when the law allows fifteen."
