Chapter 8: Berth Nine

Berth Nine smelled of diesel, wet rope and fish, and Rongan had not been able to stay away from it for three years.

Wenzhou parked the black car at the gate, took off his jacket, and put on a yellow hard hat from the dash.

"You know how to wear that?" Rongan asked.

"I've worn it every New Year for six years."

The Hall of the Long Pier Families Trust was a low brick building at the head of the quay.

On its wall hung a bronze plaque. Rongan had walked past it a hundred times and not read it.

He read it now. Three names, and below them: Founded by Ji Zhenghao, in memory of the first shift. Nine percent, for the families.

A row of old women sat on benches in front of it, shelling beans into basins.

One of them looked up and screamed with delight.

"Little Ji!"

Rongan watched the whole row rise. They swarmed his husband, patting his sleeves and his cheeks, and pressing a cup of tea into his hand.

"You're thin," said the first. "Is she feeding you, that mother?"

"She tries," said Wenzhou, perfectly at ease.

He took a stack of red envelopes from his pocket.

"I'm sorry I'm early for the New Year. I brought these now. I have a husband."

"We heard!" cried another. "The big one! The captain!"

She turned to Rongan, looked up, and up, and put both hands on her cheeks.
