Chapter 9: The Chair
Tan Shuyi, whom the whole harbor called Madam Ji, received him in her private study at four o'clock.
She had a pot of tea and a thick ledger on the table.
"Sit, Captain."
Rongan sat. The chair was meant for a smaller person, and he sat on its front half.
"I ran this House for four years after my husband died," she said, pouring. "They called me the widow with the abacus."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't be. I was good at it."
She pushed a cup across.
"Here is what I learned. They measure you by what you do not say."
"Yes, Madam," said Rongan.
"Then listen to what I have not said."
She laid a folded sheet on the table.
"I read the Long Pier citation after the dinner. The cross is on the wrong chest."
Rongan looked at the paper and did not touch it.
"It's only a pin."
"That is what the owner of the pin always says."
Her silver hairpin caught the light.
"My son will try to carry this harbor alone. He has done it for four years. Do not let him."
"He doesn't ask for help," said Rongan.
"He asks in other ways. He asked for you."
Rongan's cup stopped halfway to his mouth.
"He stood up at that table," Madam Ji said, "in front of everyone. He doesn't do that for votes. Drink your tea."
