Chapter 19: Kingsmere

"In his own hand," Alaric repeated.

He hadn't moved from behind my chair.

"I'd like to see that."

"You will," said Gareth. "At Midwinter. With everyone else."

He offered Lavinia his arm, and she took it, and they walked out of the great hall together without looking back.

Nobody spoke until the gate bell rang behind them.

Then the princess folded the King's letter in half.

"Six days," she said. "You'll take my carriage south the day after tomorrow."

She looked down the table at Prue.

"Healer, you'll go with them. Someone has to take out those stitches."

Prue went very pink. "We're not allowed to go home for three years."

"Kingsmere isn't your home," said the princess. "And you'll be sleeping in the palace on the King's business. I've decided it doesn't count."

"Then I'll go," said Prue. "I've always wanted to see a ball. From the inside. Not through the railings."

My grandmother came too.

She said she'd go back to Highmoor village in the spring, when there was somebody up there worth arguing with.

The old shepherd stayed behind under the princess's roof.

He walked down to the gate to see us off, and pressed Alaric's hand, and then mine.

"Tell them," he said to me in valley Eastmarch. "You've got the tongue for it."
