Chapter 21: The Commander
"No," I said. "I've come to ask you something."
"Everybody's come to ask me something." He drank what was left in the glass. "Ask the Butcher. He's right there."
Alaric pulled out the stool beside him and sat down on it.
The commander stared at him.
"You've got a nerve," he said.
"So I'm told."
"I chased you up and down that pass for three years."
"You never caught me."
"No." The commander laughed, an ugly wet sound. "No, I never did. Because you were never there, were you?"
The bargemen at the window had stopped playing dice.
Prue walked up to the bar, set her satchel on it, and looked at the tavern keeper.
"A pot of black tea," she said. "Strong enough to stand a spoon in. And a bowl of salt broth, if you've got bones in the back."
"He's not paying for tea."
"I am," said Prue.
She sat down on the commander's other side.
"I'm the healer," she told him. "You're going to drink this, and then you're going to be sick, and then you're going to feel much worse, and then you're going to make sense."
"I don't want to make sense."
"Nobody does at this hour. Drink."
It took an hour.
He drank the tea. He was sick in the yard. He drank the broth.
