Chapter 26: The Council
The throne hall was so cold our breath showed.
They never heated it for the Midwinter Council, so nobody would talk too long.
The King sat on the dais in a plain dark coat, with the princess on a chair at his right hand.
The Council sat below him in a long horseshoe of carved benches, forty of them in their dark coats and pins.
Behind them, behind a brass rail, sat the families.
I saw my mother in gray silk, and my father beside her.
I saw Gareth's mother in garnet, and beside her a broad gray man with an oak leaf on his collar, the Alpha of Redoak.
Above it all ran the gallery, packed with reporters and their notebooks.
The Eastmarch delegation had a bench to the left of the dais.
Alaric sat at the end of it, with me beside him.
He'd shaved. He'd put on the black coat. The burns on his wrists showed below his cuffs, and he hadn't tried to hide them.
The commander, the shepherd and Prue were in a side room behind a door, with a guard.
The princess had put them there herself.
