Chapter 17: The Last Page
The Elder opened the journal and turned the pages without a word.
Everyone in the hall watched her do it.
Delaney stood straight and pale, with her hands folded in front of her.
"Here," Delaney said. "Page twenty. Read the entry about the healer."
The Elder read it to herself, then aloud.
"The old woman came to the house again today and said I was unwell. She looks at me and I think she knows."
"She knew my father was sick," Delaney said. "She knew he was weak. And one night he was found dead behind the hall, and she was the only one who was ever there."
"That is true," I said.
Gideon turned his head sharply.
I stood up, and Bess put a hand on my sleeve and let go.
"She was there," I said. "She shot your father once, because he was aiming a silver pistol at Gideon's back."
"Liar," Delaney said.
"She told the pack he took the bullet so they wouldn't split. She washed her hands every day for six years."
My voice cracked on the last words. I let it.
"That is the murder you're talking about."
The hall murmured, low and uneasy.
"You have a dead woman's letter," Delaney said, scornful. "I have a book with my father's own hand in it."
"Then let us read the whole book," the Elder said.
She turned to the back.
The last leaves were stuck together with old wax.
Delaney's hands tightened on each other. I saw it, and so did the Elder.
The Elder took a small knife from her belt and slit the wax along the edge.
"Do not touch the Council's evidence," she said sharply, as Delaney stepped forward.
