Chapter 13: The Charter Clause
Torin was already moving.
He had his coat half on, and his eyes had gone the colour of green glass.
"Don't," I said, and I caught his sleeve in both hands.
"He's calling me out in front of two hundred wolves."
"He's calling you out before the moon is spent."
"If I stay in this tower, every wolf at that ford hears a man hiding behind a woman."
"Then let him hear it for ten more minutes."
He looked down at my hands on his sleeve.
"There's a clause," I said. "It's in the charter bound in your vault. I read the second leaf last week while Torvi sorted bills."
"I read everything that's bound. It's a habit."
Torvi was already out of the door.
"I'll hold the stairs," she said. "Run."
I ran.
The vault was cold, and the lamp I had thrown against the wall was still a heap of glass in the corner.
The charter sat on the third shelf, a fat book in black leather with a split spine.
I opened it on the table and found the leaf with my thumb.
There it was, in a hand older than anyone now living.
I read it twice, because my heart was going too fast to trust.
Then I shut the book, pressed it to my chest, and went back up the stairs two at a time.
