Chapter 24: The Second Dawn Oath
We were mated under the second dawn, on the steps of the oldest temple in the kingdom.
It was the same sky he had paid eleven years of his life for.
The sun came up pale gold over the eastern wall, and the whole city had come to see it.
Brigid stood at my side in a new grey gown with her white hair loose.
Cullen stood at Evander's, with the Greywater wolves lined up behind him and the plain gold ring on his hand.
The eldest elder held the book of the old rite.
"By what right does the wolf stand here?" he read.
"By his own," Evander said.
"By what right does the healer stand here?"
"By mine," I said.
"Who claims her?"
Evander took my left hand and turned it palm up.
The burn scar lay across it, white, with the cut from the mine healed into a thin pink line beside it.
He kissed the scar.
"I claimed her once under the Crown's law," he said, loud enough for the back of the square. "It was the only way I could keep her alive, and I never asked her. I withdraw it. I claim nothing."
A murmur ran through the crowd.
"I ask," he said. "Maeve Corrigan, healer, owner of her own name and her own door. Will you be mine?"
"I will."
"Who claims him?" the eldest asked.
"I do," I said.
I took his scarred right hand and kissed it, in the exact place the border arrow had gone through.
"You paid your debt eight years ago, on a night you never knew," I said. "You paid it again in a stone temple with your own years. I'm calling nothing in. I'm choosing."
