Chapter 16: Receipts

Faye's POV

"She's lying," Imogen said. "Muriel, she is a frightened girl and somebody has been at her."

"Somebody has," Muriel said. "I'm looking at her."

The witness had started to cry.

The Redfern Alpha had not moved or spoken.

He was looking at his daughter, and I did not envy her.

"Father, you can't believe a servant over me."

"I believe a woman who just lost a post she was promised," he said. "I believe it very much."

I stepped forward.

"Alpha Redfern," I said. "I would like to put something in front of your wolves, since I'm the one you came to take."

He gave me a short nod.

I turned toward the Ironwood gate.

"Bess."

Bess came out from behind the sentries with a clipboard under one arm and a dish towel still over her shoulder.

She had been standing there the whole time, and she had not made a sound.

"I've been waiting for you to ask," she said.

I took the clipboard and held it up so the front rows could see.

"Three times in ten days, I booked the Stillwater jeweler for Luna-elect Imogen," I said. "The first was to fit the ring. The second was to make it tighter. The third was to make it tighter again."

"A ring that fit would not need three visits," I said.

"It was too big," Imogen said.

"It was resized to a smaller finger twice, and each time it was off her hand in a day."

I turned the page.

"Here is the jeweler's own copy of the third invoice. It was sent to me in my old office. Bess has had it since the morning I left."

Bess nodded.

"The jeweler's courier knew me from the kitchen," she said. "He gave it to me because it had come back undelivered."

"Why undelivered?" the Redfern Alpha said.
