Chapter 12: The Seat
Torin called the whole pack to the Council Hall at noon.
I did not know he was going to do it until the bell rang across the village.
He had left the cabin at first light with his shirt buttoned wrong, and he had kissed nothing and asked for nothing.
At the door he had only said, "I have to do one thing first. Please don't come."
So of course I came.
I stood at the back of the hall, against the stone wall, between Bettina and the old woman from the lake.
Two hundred wolves filled the benches.
Edmund sat on the front bench with his hands folded on his cane.
Cecily sat beside her father, in white.
Torin walked up the aisle alone and climbed the dais.
He turned to face them.
His eyes were grey again. Whatever the night had given him had worn off by morning.
He did not hide it.
"Most of you saw what happened at the anniversary dinner," he said. "You saw me reject my mate before this pack."
Silence.
"I did it because I was shown a doctor's report. It said she could not bear a child."
He took a breath.
"The report was a lie. The doctor never examined her. He wrote what he was paid to write, and the man who paid him is sitting in the front row."
A low sound went through the hall.
Edmund did not move.
"Torin," said Cecily's father, rising. "This is hardly the place."
"This is the only place," Torin said.
He looked down at his father.
"I took the word of the man who raised me. I did not ask my mate one question. I stood in front of you all and called her unfit, and she was the best Luna this pack has had in thirty years."
