Chapter 11: Pink Coat

Corbin's POV

Vaughn put the pages on my desk without a word and stood back against the wall.

I had not slept in six days.

The ring on my hand was a dead gray band, and the wolves in my pack had stopped hearing me.

I read the first page.

It was a column of dates and times, and the same number over and over.

I read the second page, and the third.

Every call had been made from a phone I had paid for.

The last page was a log from my own tablet. It showed a guest login opening a file at one in the morning from my penthouse.

The file was the border route.

I looked up at Vaughn.

"Cassandra gave you this?"

"She said to put it in your hand," Vaughn said. "She isn't coming back."

I put the pages down very carefully.

The door opened, and Camille walked in.

She wore a white cashmere coat with a pink brooch at the collar, and she carried a thermal soup container in both hands.

"Corbin," she said, and her whole face softened. "You haven't eaten in two days. I made you the broth you like."

She set the container on my desk.

Her bag slid from her shoulder and landed beside it, open.

Inside, wrapped in a silk scarf, was a small glass vial.

It was empty.

I knew that vial. It was a clear lab flask with a green wax seal, and a handwritten label that began with two letters.
